What is it?The Parent Leadership Network is modeled after the Parent to Parent system.
We will establish a database of parent leaders from local, state, and federal councils. In this database, we will keep track of parent leaders who are interested in:
Parents seeking to connect with others around a common topic may call Marilyn Gutierrez, our Project Coordinator, and she will find someone who might be interested in linking up.
- exploring a topic with another leader
- developing an informal mentoring relationship
- sharing information or ideas about a particular problem
Being a parent representative on a council can be a confusing, but exhilarating experience. The network is set up to provide individuals with an opportunity to connect through email or personal phone calls around issues of interest. For example, it may be helpful for a parent just starting on a council to discuss issues with a more seasoned parent representative. Or it may be helpful for a new council chair to link up with a peer in another state. At other times, this may be a chance to learn about a particular policy issue by consulting with someone else with experience or a similar interest.
In order for you to participate in the Parent Leadership Network, we ask that you first complete a short "application" which reflects both your expertise and those areas you'd like to find out more about. Upon receiving your completed survey, we’ll enter your name and interest areas in our database. When a request comes in that matches yours, we’ll contact you via phone or email and give you the contact information that you will need to communicate with each other. (Unfortunately, our project will not be able to support long distance calls or email accounts; however, we can give you some ideas about how to connect using low-cost or free internet links if you care to do so.)
